When It's Time for a New Aluminium Gutter
Aluminium gutters are a brilliant choice for UK homes – they’re strong, rust-resistant, and can last for decades. But even the best gutters don’t last forever. So, how do you know when it’s time to replace yours?
Here are the signs to watch out for:
Leaks and Drips
If your gutter is leaking or dripping in places it shouldn't, that’s a clear warning. Sometimes it's a simple seal or joint, but if it keeps happening – or if water is pouring out from places it shouldn't – it might be time to say goodbye.
Sagging or Pulling Away
Aluminium gutters should sit neatly along your roofline. If they're sagging, dipping, or pulling away from the house, that's not just unsightly – it means they’re not doing their job properly. Over time, this can lead to bigger problems like water damage or damp walls.
Cracks or Splits
Small cracks might seem harmless, but they can quickly turn into big ones. Water can get into these cracks, freeze during colder months, and make the damage worse. If you notice any visible damage, especially along the base or joints, it could be time for a replacement.
Peeling Paint or Rust Stains
Aluminium doesn’t rust like steel, but you might still see paint peeling or powdery white stains (called "oxidation"). These are signs the metal is breaking down. If it’s only in one spot, a repair might do – but if it’s all over, a new gutter is likely needed.
Pooling Water or Overflowing Gutters
If water isn’t flowing smoothly through your gutter and down the pipe, it means there’s a blockage – or worse, the gutter is no longer pitched correctly. Constant overflows can damage your roof, walls, and foundation. Replacing the gutter might be more cost-effective in the long run.
It’s Over 20 Years Old
Aluminium gutters can last 20–30 years, depending on weather and maintenance. If yours is older and starting to show signs of wear, it may be more sensible (and safer) to upgrade now, rather than wait for a major issue.
